Bull Trial Open Day 2007

The CBNZ Bull Trial Open Day was held on 7th November 2007. This is the 2nd year in succession for Charolais to run a bull unit on the property of Andrew,Wendy and Matt Totman. The bulls are coming along well, considering the dry conditions Taihape has been experiencing.

An estimate of 35 people visited the property that afternoon to view the potential lineup for “Beef Expo 2008”. A big thank you to the members who travelled long distances to be there.

We held an Open Discussion on the “Selection of a Bull Calf” for the Bull Trial Unit with Donna Bengston taking the floor.

Thank you Donna for your time and effort and hope that everyone in attendance got some excellent valid points out of this session. Thank you to Pete who expertly cooked up Beef Steaks kindly donated by Affco, for afternoon tea.

Due to “The Rusty Trophy” not being finished in time for “Beef Expo” 2007 we decided it would be appropriate to do the presentation at this venue to the Winners Brian, Jean, Ian & Lorraine Clements, who bred “Forest View Arrow”. - Thankyou Stuart for facilitating at 5 mins notice.

A special thanks to all the Totmans who give up their busy farming schedule to cater for us to hold these Open Days. A lot of work goes into preparing for these days, especially this time of the year.

A relaxed day was enjoyed by all.

Delayed presentation of the Rusty Trophy for Champion Bull at Expo,
Ian and Jamie Clements, Wendy Totman and Stuart Gilmour.

Charolais Council News:

Rule Reminder

Council would like to stress the importance  in maintaining  the Breed’s identity that the following rules are adhered to especially when the cattle are on public display or sold for breeding.

11. Red Factor. Red factor Females and Males are acceptable, namely, those with even coat colour ranging from light brown to red, but must be identified with (RF) on registration certificates, sale catalogues and promotion.

11.2. If the resulting progeny has a coat colour of Red factor the resulting calf will be recorded and registered on the same terms as all calves entered into the herd Books and must comply with the rules in Section Two or Three. Coat colour of mixed colour, Deep Red and/or black is not acceptable for registration. Note: Harsh broken colour describes cattle with two (or more) colours, or marked in such a way, as to make doubtful their identity as purebred Charolais.

11.3. A minimum of three (3) months’ prior notice shall be given in writing to the Secretary of any requirement for an opinion by Council of acceptability of any Charolais on the ground of colour. It should be noted that the decision with regard to colour of any duly appointed Inspector at a show or sale would be final.

11.4. No Charolais of a coat colour which does not meet the standards set down in these regulations, (refer 6.1-6.3 above) will be shown.

Advertising

If breeders would like to advertise their Bull sales or studs at Beef Expo on the Charolais stand they can with one  A4 size poster, we want to keep it uniform so A4 it is only.

Registry

Reminder calf entries for 2007 born calves are due by 22nd January 2008. Group Run cut off is 20th February 2008.

Myophosphorylase

Myophosphorylase status reporting on the database on the web has been updated.

When calves are entered they will automatically get an NN status if both parents have an NN status and the whole database has been updated so if you would like to look at your animals to check their status you can by going online to www.charolais.net.nz  or by calling Linda Rule at PBB.

World News

The Canadian Charolais Society  along with the British have transferred their data bases on to the Australian ABRI system so when searching on their animals the format is now the same as Charolais Breeders NZ.

Pedigree , Performance and Memership Information On-line

Myophosphorylase

All Myophosphorylase results are now available for viewing on Breedplan using Internet Solutions.  Also in regards to MYO testing that all animals after the 1st January 2007 that haven’t been tested can not be transferred to another breeder.  It is absolutely necessary that the buyer check this out before purchasing.

Along with buyers being aware all breed members need to be aware of not selling any animals to a breeder without having them tested.  A phone call to the office if you are unsure, but any animals that have been tested you will now be able to look at their MYO status online.

It would also be imperative for anyone purchasing unregistered purebred Charolais animals to make sure they are tested for the deficiency.  Keep in mind   “Buyer Beware”

Instructions for sample collection and submission

All blood samples (2 purple top EDTA vacutainer tubes from each animal) must be collected by a registered veterinarian.  Ensure samples do not clot – gently invert tubes of blood several times immediately after collection.  Use a new vacutainer needle for each animal and keep the vacutainer needle holder clean at all times.  The test is extremely sensitive and will detect very small quantities of contaminating blood which may validate test results.

Complete all requested information on Sample submission form.  Clearly label each tube with its number (preferably animal number e.g. V12) and owner name – (Ensure accurate and full animal identification details are recorded on the Sample Request Form along with the tube and animal number).  Retain a copy of this form for your records.

Ensure samples are chilled – NOT FROZEN – immediately after collection, especially during hot weather.  Samples can be stored overnight in a refrigerator and dispatched by courier services to the laboratory the next day.  Please ensure tubes are well wrapped to prevent breakages in transit – send samples in a rigid container (Styrofoam or cardboard).  Include a chill pack during warmer weather.  DNA quality will decrease with time so prompt delivery of blood samples to the laboratory is essential.

Send samples to:

Equine Blood Typing and Research Centre
Drysdale Drive, Massey University
Private Bag, PALMERSTON NORTH

AI Sires

There has been an increase in the Fee for licensing AI Sires.  The cost of this is now $100.00 for New Zealand Sires and $200.00 for International Sires.

The rules for registering an AI Sire are:

A.    A full five generation pedigree, (i.e. animal plus Four generations) complete with the country of origin.  Herd book numbers, colour and actual percentage purity for each animal.

B.    DNA profile established.  Blood typing of the animal is optional.

C.    Imported Sires must be translocation 1/29 tested clear with results made known to the Society.

D.   Fees - $200 plus GST for International Sires - $100 for NZ Sires must be included.

E.    Myophosphorylase Tested.

The following must be sought if available:-

F.     A calving summary of the progeny from the sire, which includes the number of calves recorded, percentage death rate, and percentage of difficult calving rate.

G.   Performance information on the Sire and parents should also be provided.

The license may be revoked by an inquiry at the discretion of the Council. The council may refuse to accept registration of the said bull or resulting progeny if they may do harm to the future of the Breed.

New Calf Crop 2007-Online registrations

As this seasons calves are born, keep in mind the ease of entering calves via Internet Solutions. As part of the enhancement of Internet Solutions, a facility to allow online registration of calves and inputting of performance data has been created. This will save computer-literate breeders the time and effort of filling in paper based forms and discount any possibility of data entry errors at the PBB end (rather any data entry errors will be able to be tracked back to the Home Office!)

For those of you that entered calves and performance data this way thanks very much please keep it up. If there is anybody that requires any information or may have struggled this year, please let us know and we will do all we can to help.
