President’s Foreword

Welcome one and all to the second Charolais Breeders NZ Inc. Bull Evaluation unit.

It will be an extremely hard task to better our inaugural trial last year but results so far indicate it is well on track. A huge thanks once again must go to our trial committee Liz, Stuart & Noel and our graziers – Andrew Totman and family for their time and effort and dedication in gaining maximum performance from our young sires.

Ultimately in the end the success of these trials are realised at the National sales held in May.

All intending purchasers will be made most welcome.

James Duthie, President

‘Potaka’ Farm Profile:

The Charolais bull trial is now into its 2nd year being held once again at ‘Potaka’ the property of Andrew Matt & Wendy Totman at Omatane on the banks of the Rangitikei, south of Taihape. This area is generally regarded as summer safe with winters a little easier and some snow falls.

The property’s total area is 734ha, consisting of 160ha of flat country with the balance of steep hill country. The flats being set up into cells as an intensive beef finishing unit.

The Totmans finish 250 cattle each year, grown to over 300kg before their second winter, made up from purchasing 100kg Friesian bull calves and the steer progeny from their Fresian/Hereford cows mated to the Charolais bulls.

No replacements are kept, the heifer calves are also fattened to 270kg. The Totmans have always been keen on Charolais cattle and saw the potential of the growth and finishing in Charolais cross animals many years ago.

Their 3rd son Marcus also has a very keen interest in the breed and farms a few stud cows on the property. Over 5000 sheep are also farmed at Potaka. Again the trial bulls will be run together as one mob on grass only, supplemented with baleage through the winter months.

The new intake of 22 bulls arrived 1st week June and are weighed on a monthly basis to monitor their growth.
